Nomenclatural History
The species Mycobacterium tuberculosis was originally described by Lehmann and Neumann 1896. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. Riojas et al. published an emended description of this species in 2018. In 1999, Aranaz et al. reduced this species to the rank of subspecies to form (Zopf 1883) Lehmann and Neumann 1896 (Approved Lists 1980) . Riojas et al. established this name as an earlier heterotypic synonym of Castets et al. 1969 (Approved Lists 1980) in 2018. Riojas et al. established this name as an earlier heterotypic synonym of Karlson and Lessel 1970 (Approved Lists 1980) in 2018. Riojas et al. established this name as an earlier heterotypic synonym of (Aranaz et al. 1999) Aranaz et al. 2003 in 2018. Riojas et al. established this name as an earlier heterotypic synonym of Reed 1957 (Approved Lists 1980) in 2018.
