Nomenclatural History
The species Rhodococcus equi was originally described by Goodfellow and Alderson 1977. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. Nouioui et al. published an emended description of this species in 2018. Sly et al. formed this name in 1983 by placing the species Magnusson 1923 (Approved Lists 1980) into the genus Zopf 1891 (Approved Lists 1980). Goodfellow established this name as a later heterotypic synonym of (Morse 1912) Eberson 1918 (Approved Lists 1980) in 1986. Rainey et al. established this name as an earlier heterotypic synonym of (Turfitt 1944) McClung 1974 (Approved Lists 1980) in 1995. In 2013, Jones et al. established as the basonym of (Magnusson 1923) Jones et al. 2013 . Jones et al. established as a later homotypic synonym of (Magnusson 1923) Jones et al. 2013 in 2013.

A recent review of the nomenclatural history of Rhodococcus equi and its heterotypic synonyms reveals a situation in which the strict application of the Rules of the International Code of Nomenclature of Prokaryotes have resulted in the renaming of this known zoonotic pathogen, which may be reasonably viewed as a perilous name. This situation can be remedied only by the Judicial Commission rendering an opinion to conserve the name Rhodococcus equi and to reject its earlier heterotypic synonym, Corynebacterium hoagii.
