Nomenclatural History
The subspecies Prochlorococcus marinus marinus was originally described by Rippka et al. 2000. This name was affected by Judicial Opinion 81 in 2008. In 2000, Rippka et al. reduced Chisholm et al. 1992 to the rank of subspecies.
