Nomenclatural History
The species Prochlorococcus marinus was originally described by Chisholm et al. 1992. This name was affected by Judicial Opinion 81 in 2008. In 2000, Rippka et al. reduced this species to the rank of subspecies to form (Chisholm et al. 1992) Rippka et al. 2000 .
