The species Propionibacterium avidum was originally described by Moore and Holdeman 1969. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. In 2016, Scholz and Kilian established as the basonym of (Eggerth 1935) Scholz and Kilian 2016 emend. Nouioui et al. 2018 .
