The species Sulfolobus tokodaii was originally described by Suzuki et al. 2002. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 87 in 2002. This name was affected by Judicial Opinion 81 in 2008. In 2018, Tsuboi et al. established as the basonym of (Suzuki et al. 2002) Tsuboi et al. 2018 .
