The species Acidianus ambivalens was originally described by Fuchs et al. 1996. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 58 in 1996. Fuchs et al. formed this name in 1996 by placing the species Zillig et al. 1987 into the genus (sic) Segerer et al. 1986 emend. Plumb et al. 2007 corrig. Segerer et al. 1986 emend. Plumb et al. 2007.
