Nomenclatural History

The subspecies Gluconobacter oxydans oxydans was originally described by De Ley 1961. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. In 1974, De Ley and Frateur reduced
Gluconobacter oxydans (Henneberg 1897) De Ley 1961 (Approved Lists 1980) emend. Hördt et al. 2020
to the rank of subspecies.
Although the Approved Lists refer to De Ley (1961) as the effective publication, this subspecies was first mentioned in De Ley and Frateur (1974).
