The subspecies Gluconobacter oxydans sphaericus was originally described by Ameyama 1975. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. Malimas et al. elevated this subspecies to the rank of species to form the name (Ameyama 1975) Malimas et al. 2008 in 2008.
