The species Mycoplasma mycoides was originally described by Freundt 1955. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. This name was affected by Judicial Opinion 22 in 1958. In 1955, Freundt reduced this species to the rank of subspecies to form
Mycoplasma mycoides mycoides (Borrel et al. 1910) Freundt 1955 (Approved Lists 1980) emend. Manso-Silván et al. 2009
. Judicial Commission formed this name in 1958 by placing the species
Asterococcus mycoides Borrel et al. 1910
into the genus Mycoplasma Nowak 1929 (Approved Lists 1980) emend. Gupta et al. 2018.
