The species Veillonella alcalescens was originally described by Prévot 1933. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. In 1965, Rogosa reduced this species to the rank of subspecies to form
Veillonella alcalescens alcalescens Prévot 1933 (Approved Lists 1980)
. Mays et al. established this name as a later heterotypic synonym of
Veillonella parvula (Veillon and Zuber 1898) Prévot 1933 (Approved Lists 1980) emend. Mays et al. 1982
in 1982.
