The family Nitrobacteraceae was originally proposed by Buchanan 1917. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. Hördt et al. published an emended description of this family in 2020. Hördt et al. established this name as an earlier heterotypic synonym of
Bradyrhizobiaceae Garrity et al. 2006
in 2020. Hördt et al. transferred the members of
Bradyrhizobiaceae Garrity et al. 2006
into this family in 2020. This name replaces the name
Incertae sedis 121 Tirandaz et al. 2015
.
