The species Rhizobium nepotum was originally described by Puławska et al. 2012. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 147 in 2012. In 2015, Mousavi et al. established as the basonym of (Puławska et al. 2012) Mousavi et al. 2016 emend. Hördt et al. 2020 .
