The species Ponticoccus lacteus was originally described and validly published by Yang et al. 2015. Hördt et al. published an emended description of this species in 2020. Liu et al. established this name as a later heterotypic synonym of Zheng et al. 2010 emend. Hördt et al. 2020 in 2018.
