The species Borrelia mayonii was originally described and validly published by Pritt et al. 2016. Oren et al. corrected this name from (sic) to . Hördt et al. published an emended description of this species in 2020. In 2019, Gupta established as the basonym of (Pritt et al. 2016) Gupta 2020 .
