Nomenclatural History
The subspecies Propionibacterium acnes defendens was originally described and validly published by McDowell et al. 2016. In 2018, Nouioui et al. established as the basonym of (McDowell et al. 2016) Nouioui et al. 2018 emend. Dekio et al. 2019 .

This subspecies was stranded in the transfer of Propionibacterium acnes to the new genus Cutibacterium by Scholz et al. 2016. This was later corrected by Nouioui et al. 2018.
