The species Borrelia afzelii was originally described by Canica et al. 1993. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 48 in 1994. In 2014, Adeolu and Gupta established Borrelia afzelii as the basonym of
Borreliella afzelii (Canica et al. 1994) Adeolu and Gupta 2018
.
