The species Borreliella afzelii was originally described by Adeolu and Gupta 2014. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 182 in 2018. Adeolu and Gupta formed this name in 2014 by placing the species Canica et al. 1994 into the genus Adeolu and Gupta 2015.
