The subspecies Bacteroides melaninogenicus intermedius was originally described by Holdeman and Moore 1970. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. Johnson and Holdeman elevated this subspecies to the rank of species to form the name (Holdeman and Moore 1970) Johnson and Holdeman 1983 in 1983.
