The species Prevotella brevis was originally described and validly published by Avguštin et al. 1997. Hahnke et al. published an emended description of this species in 2016. Avguštin et al. elevated the subspecies (Bryant et al. 1958) Avguštin et al. 1997 to the rank of species to form this name in 1997.
