The species Flavobacterium ferrugineum was originally described by Sickles and Shaw 1934. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. In 2006, Xie and Yokota established Flavobacterium ferrugineum as the basonym of
Terrimonas ferruginea (Sickles and Shaw 1934) Xie and Yokota 2006 emend. Jin et al. 2013
