The species Pedobacter heparinus was originally described and validly published by Steyn et al. 1998. Zhou et al. published an emended description of this species in 2012. Steyn et al. formed this name in 1998 by placing the species
Sphingobacterium heparinum (Payza and Korn 1956) Takeuchi and Yokota 1993
into the genus Pedobacter Steyn et al. 1998 emend. Wei et al. 2018.
