The species Cytophaga aquatilis was originally described by Strohl and Tait 1978. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. In 1996, Bernardet et al. established Cytophaga aquatilis as the basonym of
Flavobacterium hydatis Bernardet et al. 1996 emend. Hahnke et al. 2016
