The species Cytophaga johnsonae was originally described by Stanier 1947. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. In 1996, Bernardet et al. established Cytophaga johnsonae as the basonym of
Flavobacterium johnsoniae (Stanier 1947) Bernardet et al. 1996 emend. Chen et al. 2013
. Bernardet et al. established this name as an earlier heterotypic synonym of
Flexibacter aurantiacus Lewin 1969 (Approved Lists 1980)
in 1996.
