The subspecies Photorhabdus luminescens kayaii was originally described by Hazir et al. 2004. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 98 in 2004. Machado et al. elevated this subspecies to the rank of species to form the name (Hazir et al. 2004) Machado et al. 2018 in 2018.
