The species Halovibrio variabilis was originally described by Fendrich 1988. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 29 in 1989. This name was affected by Judicial Opinion 93 in 2014. In 1996, Dobson and Franzmann established Halovibrio variabilis as the basonym of
Halomonas variabilis (Fendrich 1989) Dobson and Franzmann 1996
