The genus Serpula was originally proposed and validly published by Stanton et al. 1991. Stanton replaced this illegitimate name with (Stanton et al. 1991) Stanton 1992 in 1992.

The genus name Serpula is illegitimate; it is a homonym of the fungal genus name Serpula.
