The species Halorubrum distributum was originally described and validly published by Oren and Ventosa 1996. Infante-Domínguez et al. published an emended description of this species in 2020. Oren and Ventosa formed this name in 1996 by placing the species
Halorubrobacterium distributum (Zvyagintseva and Tarasov 1989) Kamekura and Dyall-Smith 1996
into the genus Halorubrum McGenity and Grant 1996 emend. Oren et al. 2009. Infante-Domínguez et al. established this name as an earlier heterotypic synonym of
Halorubrum terrestre Ventosa et al. 2004
in 2020. Infante-Domínguez et al. established this name as an earlier heterotypic synonym of
Halorubrum arcis Xu et al. 2007
in 2020. Infante-Domínguez et al. established this name as an earlier heterotypic synonym of
Halorubrum litoreum Cui et al. 2007
in 2020.
