Nomenclatural History
This name was affected by Judicial Opinion 82 in 2008. The species Lactobacillus zeae was originally described by Kuznetsov 1959. It pre-dated the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names but was excluded from those lists. In 1996 the name was revived and validly published by Dicks et al.. Huang et al. published an emended description of this species in 2020. established this name as a later heterotypic synonym of Collins et al. 1989 in 2019. In 2020, Liu and Gu established as the basonym of (Dicks et al. 1996) Liu and Gu 2020 .

Judicial Opinion 82 (Judicial Commission 2008) indicated that Lactobacillus zeae (ex Kuznetsov 1959) Dicks et al. 1996 contravenes Rules 51b (1) and (2) of the ICNP "because this strain was shown to be in the same taxon as ATCC 393, the type of Lactobacillus casei, and which cannot be typified by ATCC 334, a strain of Lactobacillus paracasei". However, this was based on a misapplication of those rules. The correct interpretation is that Lactobacillus zeae is a later heterotypic synonym of Lactobacillus paracasei.
