The order Actinomycetales was originally proposed by Buchanan 1917. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. Stackebrandt et al. published an emended description of this order in 1997. Subsequent emendations were proposed by Zhi et al. in 2009 and Salam et al. in 2020. Stackebrandt et al. transferred the members of
Micrococcales Prévot 1940 (Approved Lists 1980) emend. Salam et al. 2020
into this order in 1997. Stackebrandt et al. transferred the members of
Mycobacteriales Janke 1924 (Approved Lists 1980) emend. Gupta 2019
into this order in 1997.
