Nomenclatural History
This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 15 in 1984. The species Anaplasma centrale was originally described by Theiler 1911. It pre-dated the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names but was excluded from those lists. In 1984 the name was revived by Ristic and Kreier. Khumalo et al. published an emended description of this species in 2018. This name replaces the name Ristic and Kreier 1974 .

Schindler et al. 1966 describes specific antigens as characteristics of the type strain, which are cited by Ristic and Kreier 1984 in the description of this species.
