The species Cytophaga heparina was originally described and validly published by Christensen 1980. Christensen formed this name in 1980 by placing the species
Flavobacterium heparinum Payza and Korn 1956 (Approved Lists 1980)
into the genus Cytophaga Winogradsky 1929 (Approved Lists 1980) emend. Nakagawa and Yamasato 1996. In 1992, Takeuchi and Yokota established Cytophaga heparina as the basonym of
Sphingobacterium heparinum (Payza and Korn 1956) Takeuchi and Yokota 1993
