Propionibacterium acnes (Gilchrist 1900) Douglas and Gunter 1946 (Approved Lists 1980)
Nomenclatural History
The species Propionibacterium acnes was originally described by Douglas and Gunter 1946. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. In 2016, Scholz and Kilian established as the basonym of (Dekio et al. 2015) Scholz and Kilian 2016 emend. Nouioui et al. 2018 . Scholz and Kilian elevated the subspecies Dekio et al. 2015 to the rank of species to form this name in 2016.

Scholz et al. 2016 attempted to abandon the subspecies of this taxon, essentially re-elevating the coordinate status subspecies Prop. acnes acnes back to the rank of species prior to transferring it to the novel genus Cutibacterium.
