The species Serpulina innocens was originally described and validly published by Stanton 1992. Stanton formed this name in 1992 by placing the species
Serpula innocens (Kinyon and Harris 1979) Stanton et al. 1991
into the genus Brachyspira Hovind-Hougen et al. 1983. In 1997, Ochiai et al. established Serpulina innocens as the basonym of
Brachyspira innocens (Kinyon and Harris 1979) Ochiai et al. 1998 emend. Hördt et al. 2020
.
